Abstract

As the world continues to adapt and change, we seek to understand what some of the more unseen impacts may be. Photography is incorporated into every aspect of our lives in ways we aren’t always consciously aware of. Environmental issues have become a major factor in creating pollution in our society and it affects our lives.  This study examines the role of photography in enhancing and educating public awareness on environmental issues in Malaysia. A qualitative method has been used which is an in-depth interview with 6 photographers. All informants are divided into two groups which are freelance photographer and press photographer. Data were analyzed and there four major themes emerged from the discussion. The first theme is communication technology was the main factor that helps to create awareness among the society. Second theme is framing is an important factor in ensuring that messages can be conveyed more effectively to the society. The third theme is subject matter. Furthermore, the subject matter is able to communicate directly with the audience. Next, every image needs to have their own storytelling. Storytelling is able to create more awareness among the audiences on the issues.
